A penalty kick looks like the simplest contest in sport. One player, one ball, one goalkeeper, eleven metres. The taker should score almost every time, and yet in the biggest moments, the best players in the world miss. Researchers in psychology, physics and statistics have spent years studying why. What they have found is less about technique and more about nerves, patterns and very small margins.

In short: the ball is faster than the keeper, so penalties are decided by guessing, placement and pressure. Keepers usually dive early; takers usually go to their stronger side.
